Walks Programme

Below is our summer walks programme, with walks ranging from 4 - 10 miles on the Quantock Hills, Exmoor, Somerset Levels, Mendips and Blackdown Hills.

Warning

Unless otherwise stated, all walks are on a Sunday. Please try to arrive 15 minutes early for a prompt start. Please bring a picnic lunch and plenty to drink.

Car

Walk leaders are not responsible for arranging transport to and from the start of walks. Although we do try to car share from Taunton and Yeovil, there is no guarantee of a lift-share and members turn up at their own risk of missing out on a walk. Passengers should be prepared to contribute to fuel costs.

No Cars Estimated departure time from Taunton (T) and Yeovil (Y) is shown in the grid. Please note that these are departure times and they have been estimated. The actual journey times may vary.

The following icons indicate the difficulty of the walk and the type of event:

We'll venture through Langport, Aller Woods, High Ham, and Huish Episcopi. If the firing range happens to be in use we will instead have to skirt past the man at Nettlebed Cottage who wards walkers off with a shotgun. We'll get a lovely view of Aller Moor on the levels from Aller Hill. We should see blue bells in Aller Woods. We'll walk past Stembridge Mill (the last remaining thatched windmill in the UK) and the Church in the Field at Low Ham. Suggested visit to the pub in Pitney (The Halfway House) after the walk. Optional visit to Murphys Bar one quarter of the way round.
Park and meet from Langport car park (free).

We will be catching the train from Taunton to Tiverton Parkway (probably the 0916, arriving 0927, but to be confirmed). The walk will follow the route, or as close as possible, of the Grand Western Canal. We will finish at Taunton train station. The walk is fairly long, but relatively flat. There are also some interesting remains of old canal structures to see along the way. We will be passing through the edge of Wellington, and so there is the possibility of leaving or joining the group there (connection with Taunton by First bus which runs hourly service on Sundays). Not sure what sort of times this bus service runs- contact me in advance if you plan to do this so we can co-ordinate rendez-vous.
NB. Longer serving members may recall I led this walk in two halves (due to a cycle accident) in 2006, finally a chance to walk it all at once!
Park at Kilkenny car park adjacent to Taunton Train Station (free on Sundays). Meet at Taunton train station entrance hall by ticket office.
PLEASE NOTE THE EARLY START TIME TO ALLOW TIME TO FOR TRAIN TRAVEL.
